The key to a great capsule wardrobe is to pay attention to the colors and silhouettes that you are buying. You want to make sure that you can have a pile of clothes, blindly pick three items, and they’ll all work when you put them together. My suggestion for you is to focus on adding these basics to your closet, and you can always work in your favorite unique pieces to create something magical.

I use a capsule wardrobe! So I definitely practice what I preach. I also use Ally bank to create different savings buckets for my clothes addiction. When my savings for clothes bucket reaches around $200, I’ll look online for something to add to my rotation or to replace an old item. It doesn’t have to be a plain cookie-cutter garment, you can do a capsule wardrobe using cool unique pieces as well, but you do have to have the foundation pieces first to build onto.

Here are the foundation pieces that I recommend. They are:

good quality

feel good, sustainable fashion brands

Though, to get a variety of price points, I did save some items from Zara (but who doesn’t love Zara)

basics that are easy to incorporate into your existing wardrobe

pieces that still have something to say

I love the neckline on this one. Solid basic that doesn’t feel so basic!

I think a cropped look will look amazing with your hourglass shape! Pairs great with high waisted jeans, dress pants, or skirts.

This vest is so cute on its own or styled over a long sleeve button front. Great spring, fall, and winter top.

Sustainable brand, amazing quality, woman owned company. And it’s French. What else could you ask for?! This is a piece inspired by one of your Pinterest boards!

A little black dress that has a lot to say <3 This wrap style is great for heart shapes, anything that accentuates your neckline and pulls taut at the waist will look amazing on you!

$39.50

Smaller price, but it’s Zara so the quality is definitely going to differ. However, it’s very cute!

$55

Love this as a unique piece. Pair with any basic top <3

$45.90

Love this 70s inspired crochet skirt! Not really a piece for capsule wardrobe, but couldn’t resist adding it here.

$125

A good addition to your work wardrobe.

$160

A more adult version of a work pant that has it’s own style and sense of sophistication.

$49.50

What a fun pant for going out! Goes great with the cream blouses I’ve saved for you, or mix it up with the navy.

$79

Such a good look to switch up the vibe from skinny/flare!

$139

If you’re only getting one jean, I’d recommend this one. Madewell jeans last (in my personal experience) about 4-5 years. This way high jean, with a high rise around 11” or 12”, will look great with your proportions! And if you turn in an old pair of jeans, any brand, you’ll get $20 off a new pair :) J.crew does this too!

$105

I know this is a higher price range for a belt, but it’s so unique and can completely elevate any outfit. Needless to say, this will never go out of style.

$95

These are so cute and can go with pretty much anything. A new take on a ked

$160

1970s inspired clogs that I’m obsessed with. Goes with anything, 100%. This with the little black knit dress, amazing look.
